It’s possible that if you’re interested in alternative medicine remedies you have heard of oil pulling. If you haven’t we are here to shed some light on the topic and explain why you may want to give it a try.
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth for 20 minutes (minimum 5) without swallowing and then spitting it out.
Why do it?
The idea behind oil pulling is that the mouth is home to millions of bacteria, fungi, viruses and other toxins. The swishing of oil acts like a cleanser and helps pull out these unwanted bad guys before they can spread into your body.
Some of the claimed health benefits:
- Boosts the immune syste
- Reduces stress
- Reduces internal inflammation
- Whitens teeth
- Increases energy
- Detoxes the body
- Reduces headaches
- Improves quality of skin
- Promotes oral hygiene
- Improves sleep
We have tried this practice and find it to be very therapeutic! Typically we do it first thing in the morning, as we are getting ready for our day. You can use a variety of oils including organic coconut oil (it will liquefy in your mouth), sesame oil or olive oil. The quality of oil is also important. We like coconut oil because of its wonderful anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. It’s best to spit the oil in to the garbage can as spitting it in your toilet or sink may cause some plumbing problems.
This might all sound strange to you but we always say if something could improve you health why not try it!
