Have you ever thought of charging up your diet with superfoods? You may have seen us mention superfoods in other articles and wondered, “what exactly are superfoods and why do we need them?”
Here’s why. Superfoods can offer superior sources of important nutrients, which are often found in a more concentrated form in these foods. Superfoods are usually extremely high in antioxidants and other essential vitamins and mineral (nutrients we need from diet because we cannot make them in the body). So, in a sense, you get more ‘bang for your buck’ with superfoods.
Why do we want to include superfoods in our diet?
Did you know that food today has fewer nutrients than it did in 1950? Nutrition in food has declined partly due to poorer soil quality, which is a result of commercial agricultural practices. Some food has even been altered to grow in a way so that it is more durable during transportation at the expense of its nutritional properties! For example, there is research to show that the nutritional value of tomatoes has declined since 1950. They now contain fewer amounts of vitamin C, calcium and iron but the fiber content has increased – fiber is helpful for a stronger skin of the tomato, allowing it to resist damage during transportation.
Because of this decline of nutrients in our food, plus more readily available processed and packaged foods, we are at a greater risk of being deficient in certain nutrients – this is where superfoods come in!
Superfoods can give us that extra boost we need and provide us with a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals that can help us thrive and live longer healthier lives.
Examples of superfoods include:
- Coconut oil and coconut butter
- Goji berries
- Acai berries
- Green tea
- Salmon (wild)
- And most fruits and vegetables!
It can be helpful to think about where you can add superfoods into your diet. For me, smoothies are always a great option! I like to add ginger, coconut oil and spirulina to smoothies, and add goji berries and chia seeds to granola.
